Rare earth market update on May 27, 2025
The domestic rare earth prices are generally fluctuating within a reasonable range, with neodymium oxide prices increasing by approximately 3,000 yuan/ton, terbium oxide prices rising by about 20 yuan/kg, and holmium oxide prices going up by around 2,000 yuan/ton. On the positive side, two factors are supporting this trend: first, the continued tight supply of rare earths overseas and their relatively high prices have led to a strong sentiment among domestic suppliers to hold back sales in anticipation of further price increases; second, the rapid development of downstream industries such as robotics, smart appliances, and new energy vehicles has significantly increased the demand for rare earth functional materials, which is beneficial to the rare earth market's upward trend. On the negative side, there are also challenges: first, China's export controls on medium and heavy rare earths may accelerate the growth of domestic spot inventory levels, which could undermine suppliers' pricing power; second, the complex and volatile global economic environment, tight liquidity, and relatively abundant spot supply in the market have led to fewer downstream inquiries, resulting in limited transaction volumes.
According to the Baotou Industry and Information Technology Bureau, from January to April 2025, the added value of Baotou City's rare earth industry, crystalline silicon photovoltaic industry, aluminum industry, and steel industry increased year-on-year by 12.3%, 9%, 5%, and 1.6%, respectively, collectively contributing 4.7 percentage points to the growth of industrial added value above the designated size. Additionally, the onshore wind power equipment industry and equipment manufacturing industry saw increases of 37.5% and 23%, respectively.
