Rare earth market update on May 16, 2025
This week, domestic rare earth prices in China exhibited a volatile upward trend. At the beginning of the week, influenced by the further strengthening of China's strategic mineral export controls and a robust overseas rare earth market, many suppliers significantly raised their quotes, with praseodymium-neodymium metal and dysprosium oxide prices rising to approximately 540,000 yuan/ton and 1,680,000 yuan/ton, respectively. However, nearing the weekend, due to slower-than-expected downstream demand follow-through and a weakening of earlier positive drivers, most product prices faced significant resistance to further increases, with the upward momentum narrowing.
According to CTIA GROUP LTD, this week's price changes include: praseodymium-neodymium oxide up approximately 16,000 yuan/ton, a 3.82% increase; praseodymium-neodymium metal up about 21,000 yuan/ton, a 4.08% rise; terbium oxide up around 330 yuan/kg, a 4.76% increase; dysprosium oxide up approximately 40,000 yuan/ton, a 2.47% rise; 55N NdFeB blanks up about 5 yuan/kg, a 2.44% increase; and NdFeB scrap (praseodymium-neodymium) up around 28 yuan/kg, a 6.36% rise.
According to CCTV News, at the regular press conference held by the Ministry of Commerce on May 15, the spokesperson addressed questions regarding China's cancellation or suspension of export controls on rare earths. Spokesperson He Yongqian stated that, given the U.S. decision to revoke or adjust tariffs on China based on the consensus from high-level Sino-U.S. economic and trade talks, China is correspondingly adjusting its tariff and non-tariff counter-measures against the U.S.
